How do you direct when your own body is improvising? Kenisha on hemidystonia and hemiparesis
Hi, I’m Kenisha,
and why I wear this hand brace you can find out here. ⬇️
Imagine that your body is like a smartphone that sometimes launches its own apps without you asking for them, or simply doesn’t respond reliably to your requests. Pretty annoying, isn’t it? Well, to me, it’s a bit like one side of her body has decided to start a solo career and unpack uncontrollable movements (or just none at all) – not in the good sense like dancing, but more like trying to invent its own yoga poses. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?
Hemidystonia/hemiparesis (hemiplegia) is this idiosyncratic party on only one side of the body, where the muscles do what they want: cramp, twist and sometimes even stay in positions that look like someone has pressed the pause button. Imagine that a hand suddenly decides to be ready for a permanent fist bump without you having planned it that way. This can be quite challenging, especially if you’re trying to get things done on a day-to-day basis.
But hey, it’s not all black and white! People with hemidystonia are quite inventive when it comes to dealing with their unwanted movements. And medicine? She’s on her side! From medications that relax the muscles, to physical therapy that helps improve mobility, to cool gadgets and orthotics (What is an Ortehse?) that help keep the rebellious body parts at bay, there are plenty of tricks up your sleeve to get through the day.
My hand brace helps me to get to grips with the stray movements and to take over, to play the piano, to type a message on my phone or just to do the everyday things I like to do. 🌟
