What does an orthopaedic technician do?
Orthopaedic technicians provide patients with orthopaedic aids. For example, they make artificial limbs, orthoses, splints and bandages, or assemble and adapt walking aids. Typically, orthopaedic technology mechanics find employment in orthopaedic technology workshops or medical supply stores.
The training
Trainees learn state-of-the-art techniques, such as making lightweight orthoses with high-tech materials, and specialise in orthotics, prosthetics or rehabilitation technology. For us, it’s orthotics, especially children’s orthotics.
To this end, they are in contact with patients and work in teams with doctors and physiotherapists. The three-year apprenticeship is dual, i.e. the practical part takes place in the training company and the theoretical part at the vocational school in Gotha.
